Included are booklets and brochures (1997-1985) and newsletters (1916-1985), published by J Walter Thompson Company and its U.S. and international offices. Nineteenth-century publications give James Walter Thompson's thoughts on advertising, and include facsimiles of magazine covers and newspaper banners, as well as circulation figures and advertising rates. Later publications provide research findings, including demographic data, economic forecasts, and media information for the United States and other countries. Recruitment information, descriptions of company services, and discussions of major issues affecting the advertising industry are covered. Newsletters describe client campaigns; biographical data about personnel; research findings; organization and functions of the company and individual offices; and general market information. Newsletters contain photographs dating from 1928.

James Baird Thompson was born in Greene County, Pa., in 1840. In 1869, President Ulysses S. Grant appointed Thompson's brother-in-law, General Edward M. McCook to the post of Territorial Governor of Colorado. McCook in turn named Thompson as his private secretary. Thompson also served as Auditor of Public Accounts and as Special Agent for the Seven Bands of the Ute Indians in Colo.
